About Us

Located at 2349 Bissonnet, between Kirby and Greenbriar, Under the Volcano is a Day of the Dead themed neighborhood bar that opened in 1989.  Named after the classic novel by Malcolm Lowry, the art, décor and furniture purchased in Mexico reflects the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos.

The menu has an array of food including, Empanadas, in house smoked salmon, Steak Night, Sunday Brunch, tacos plus other Mexican favorites; made-to-order Guacamole, Queso Dip, Baja Marisco and Carne Guisada.

As the first craft cocktail bar in Houston and with an emphasis on Latin America, only fresh squeezed juices and fresh herbs are incorporated to create drinks like the Strawberry Basil Margarita, Paloma, Añejo Old Fashioned, Caipirinha and others.

The funky yellow house with two tropical patios was first an Ice house in the 40’s then Munchies Café. The award winning design emphasizes the unique flavor, color and culture of our neighbors to the south.
